Flooring Tips and Care
Preventive Maintenance
Taking care of your carpet starts at the time of installation. The beauty and life of your carpet can be prolonged by noting the areas where the carpet collects the most foot soil. As much as 80% of the soiling is caused by foot traffic. Place walk-off mats at all entrances and be sure they are cleaned or changed frequently. If they become excessively soiled, you will track even more soil onto your carpet.
Vacuuming
The most important maintenance you can do to protect your carpet is to vacuum often. The upright type with brushes and beater bar is best for most types of carpet (CAUTION: DEEP BRUSH AGITATION MAY DAMAGE LOOP PILE BERBER CARPET). Be aware that light solid colors tend to show soil more readily than multicolors or patterns, and will require more attention. Also, areas receiving more traffic such as hallways and entrances require more frequent vacuuming.
Deep Cleaning
In addition to vacuuming, overall deep cleaning on a periodic basis is necessary to keep the carpet looking its best. This deep cleaning removes the dirt, but also all unhealthy pollutants which settle in your carpet. Not to mention your health, whatever is in the carpet is what you are actually breathing. Keep in mind that your carpet is like a sponge. It will collect everything that is in the air including dust, dust mites, aerosols, car fumes, debris, pollen, pollutants, fungus, spores, bacteria, and a long list of other gross stuff. Over two million mites infest the average home. If the carpets are not cleaned yearly, the carpets will hold all of these residues. Because of this, many problems can arise from allergies, headaches, asthma, and many other related medical conditions. We cannot stress enough the importance of having your carpets cleaned yearly. This cleaning will also extend the life of your carpets and keep them looking as new as the day it was installed.
If you plan to clean your carpets yourself (which we do not recommend), the most used system is water extraction. These are the systems that can be rented at the supermarkets and hardware stores. If this system is not used correctly, it can actually seriously ruin your carpet. The system can cause over wetting which results in the carpet fibers matting down. The backing of the carpet will also eventually deteriorate. Other concerns caused by over wetting include: padding which may crumble apart, mildew that can set in under the carpet, shrinkage, wrinkling, or color fading. To alleviate all these problems, we highly recommend professional cleaning. We use the Von Schrader hot foam extraction system (see links below for more information).
Von Schrader is a state of the art hot foam extraction system. This system uses very little moisture but deep cleans your carpet from the bottom to the top. The benefits of this deep cleaning system include the fact that drying time is cut in half (2-4 hrs.), and no sticky residue is left behind. These benefits mean your carpet will stay cleaner longer and there’s no chance of mildew to form, or your carpet to shrink. It’s that simple. Either you love it or you’ll pay nothing. That is how sure we are that you will be very happy with the results.
IMPORTANT NOTE: EXCESSIVE RUBBING AND OVERWETTING WILL CAUSE PILE DISTORTION WHICH CAN PERMANENTLY DAMAGE THE CARPET FACE. ALSO, OVERWETTING CAN CAUSE PERMANENT DAMAGE TO THE BACKING.
